SR – Body Reading for Psychotherapists Workshop

Body Reading for Psychotherapists

Living experiences are Embodied experiences. Without a body there is no life, as we know it. If the body is indeed central to living experience, then it surely must have significant value in the psychological healing process. While there are many different methods for engaging the body as part of the psychotherapeutic process, they all share the common belief that the postures, movements, and tension patterns of a person’s body both reveal and influence deeply held habitual patterns that form the foundation of self perceptions on the physical, emotional and psychological levels.

This is a skill-building workshop for licensed psychotherapists, interns, and trainees wishing to develop their ability to work somatically with clients. The focus will be on reading a client’s physical patterns of organization as they relate to the psychological issues he or she is bringing to therapy. The workshop will include the development of body tracking skills and the assessment of existing and missing physical resources that are revealed in the client’s presenting psychological issues.

The course learning objectives:

  • Skills for tracking and articulating physical patterns of organization as they influence a client’s postures, gestures, and movements.
  • A basic anatomical understanding of the musculature system and how it influence posture, gesture, and movement.
  • Assessment skills for determining how physical organization relates to psychological material.
  • Assess which physical patterns offer effective access routes to core psychological material
  • Working collaboratively with clients in interpreting “psycho-physical” material.
